An altar is a powerful tool to have if you are on your spiritual journey. Churches use their altars to call those to worship and for special prayers for years. It is a special place where you can get more personal with God. I believe it is important to have one in your home if you're on your spiritual journey and want to provide a sacred space of worship. I have one in my room on my dresser and I use it for my candle prayer.
My altar is special to me. I think of it as making a phone call to through the universe to talk to God. I have some stones on it and rocks with messages. There is even a bell on it to solidify my prayers. I like to do a weekly prayer on Sundays at my altar. It starts with me cleaning and burning sage to clear the energy field. I then, sage my crystals and rocks to clear any lingering prayers or energies from a previous prayer.
On it lies my pendulum to make sure that it stays cleansed. There are many different ways to decorate an altar. I like to put things on it that represent some importance in my life. I have a small ceramic box on my altar that I placed pennies in. Each penny has a year on it that is the same year as those who were born in my immediate family. Then there's a penny to represent everyone else in the world. I used those pennies to keep everyone in my prayers for safety and God's favor.
At one point, I was going through a rough time and was told that someone was praying against me so I wrote a prayer to pray that energy away. Some people like to change their altars to reflect different phases of growth. You can have an altar that promote healing and have turquoise stones on it. Others might want to hone their spiritual gifts and have an altar with amethyst and purple like items on it. You just have to find what works for you. It is your phone line to the universe. One thing I do say is a must for anyone who has an altar and that is to treat it very sacred.
I don't touch anything on my altar without washing my hands prior. You don't want any filth or negative energy to intersect with your blessings. Don't forget to also use your altar to pray for others. I hardly say a prayer or do some kind of spiritual work without incorporating someone else. It could be a homeless person who feels hopeless and can't pray for themselves so I pray for them. I say a universal prayer for everyone in the world. So know that even if you didn't pray for yourself today that I did!
For beginners who aren't experienced with an altar just know that a small plate with a white candle is a great starter. Then as you learn and grow so will your altar. That is one thing about the spiritual path that amazes me and its the fact that it can be fun so long as you make it to be. It is an age of discovery that lasts your entire soul's life and that's eternity. In this lifetime you decide what will happen in the next. So have fun with your altar, but respect it as well.
